Africa Hitech, the futuristic music project comprising Mark Pritchard and Steve Spacek, is back with its first (and eagerly awaited) full length, 93 Million Miles. (A reference to the distance between Earth and the Sun - in case you wondered). Following on from the success of their debut EP Hitecherous from the summer of 2010 the duo has been busy in the studio cooking up that eclectic good ish.

As individual artists they both weigh in with substantial back catalogues. Pritchard with more aliases than your average (Troubleman, Global Communications and Harmonic 313 to name a few) and Spacek best known as one third of the group Spacek and his previous work with the late J Dilla.

Their combined sound on 93 Million Miles can only be described as an adventurous fusion of genres and rhythm, from dancehall to afro-beat, juke to grime that will leave you guessing which way to turn next. The one constant in this release however is the polished and sophisticated production. Tracks such as 'Don't fight it', 'Spirit' and 'Light the Way' display Africa Hitech’s meticulous weaving together of Afro-beat rhythms, jazz influence and spiritual vocals to serious effect.

Out in the Streets is the big hitter from this record (also accompanied by a dope video) and recently given the jungle remix treatment with equal success. Africa Hitech add a neat juke/ dancehall twist to Damian Marley’s well-known and well-sampled vocal, twisting and tweaking the Jamrock lyrics in and out of the pounding 160bpm beat.

Aside from this being an eclectic, accomplished and vibrant album and regardless of which genre or label you put to their music, the evolution of their sound and the timing of this release are equally important factors in making this compelling record a contemporary success.

Hudson Mohawke aka Ross Birchard, one of Warp records most savvy signings of recent years, drops his latest EP ‘Satin Panthers’ this month, the Glaswegian’s first release since his 2009 debut, Butter.

Mohawke introduces the listener to this instrumental 5 pack with ‘Octan’ a hypnotic, swirling sound-check, but don’t sit too tight, the juggernaut is just around the corner. ‘Thunder Bay’ hits (very) hard displaying a bigger more polished sound than seen in his previous work, bouncy rhythms, crunchy drums and choppy vocal samples, a relentless track that will test many sound systems – this is his ‘Overnight’ for 2011.

Satin Panthers maintains its stride with ‘Cbat’, minimal and cheeky – the type of infectious bass-beat that you could see either Busta flowing over double time or equally becoming the soundtrack to a new HBO comedy.

With ‘All your love’ HudMo maintains his trademark yet evolved sound – sped up vocal chops over sweet pianos and pounding toms. ‘Thank you’ is an epic finale – with its excess layers of drum rolls, synths and pounding sub helping to finish this quintuple off supremely.

Satin Panthers is a concise, sonically sweet and perfectly formed EP, pick it up!

The Swedish electronic four-piece, Little Dragon release their 3rd album ’Ritual Union’ this summer to much anticipation. With a substantial fan-base already formed following 2009s critically acclaimed ‘Machine dreams’ and a considerable touring schedule thrown in the mix, they are set up perfectly to recruit many new admirers with their latest effort.

Lead vocalist and much talked about Yukimi Nagano adds the perfect extra dimension to LD’s sound, her dreamy vocal soothingly weaves its way through this infectious collection of songs.

Nagano and the clean, tight production are the focal points of this soulful-electro pop release.

The title track and lead single, Ritual Union, sees Yukimi’s searching for advice and direction ‘loves sinking in the sand, I’m sorry boy that we sinned’ and ‘mother, tell me how it is, I know you’ve been through all of this’ a great song that is screaming out for some remix action. ‘Brush the heat’ and ‘Crystalfilm’ are also stand out songs displaying sharp hypnotic drums and dreamy synths

You can’t help but wonder what the result would be if LD were to push their sound a little further and step up a gear from time to time, but maybe this is all to come. In what has been a brief but robust history since forming in Gothenburg 5 years back, you can only feel that this dragon has a lot more fire to breath.

Just a few months back many hardcore UK hip hop fans were having cyberspace shit fits, foaming at the mouth, while watching and re-posting the youtube clip – who would have thunk it? surely not…. Billy Brimstone, The High Plains Drifter, Jehst…..a postman! Employed by Royal Mail!!……..Nah!?
Debates and arguments broke out on message boards: ‘Rappers can have jobs as well!’, ‘Good for him’, ‘Hip hop is dead’, ‘The music industry is …’ blah blah blah.

Whatever his employment status, this astute viral campaign entitled ‘Jehst is my postman’ did its job to perfection, a witty conduit teasing us right into the path of ‘Starting Over’ the lead single/video from Jehst’s 4th full-length, a brilliantly chopped ditty that assures you William Shields has been tucked away working hard on his music and not doing overtime at the sorting office.

‘The Dragon Of An Ordinary Family’ is a refreshing return from the seasoned MC/producer, it has been over 4 years since his last offering and it is well worth the wait. No guest appearances, just banging drum-breaks, finely chopped samples and insightful, intelligent and witty wordplay.

On tracks such as ‘England’ Jehst illustrates a bleak landscape, running through current and social affairs common to many mortals living and growing up in the UK, ‘Old No.7’ steps up the vibe, a classic stomping head-nodder that Jehst flows effortlessly over.

This is a strong LP from a man whose production and lyrics expel knowledge and familiarity of both life experience and years fine-tuning his craft and this is ultimately what resonates with many of his fans time and again…
….…and lets face it, anyone that samples Kenny Powers (The Illest) must be onto something, right? ‘Kiss my ass and suck my dick, everyone’.

This collection of songs by fLako (aka Dirg Gerner) sees the beatsmith deliver a batch of 30 quick-fire soundscapes with aplomb. ‘The Mesektet’ colates previously unreleased works, created between 2006 – 2008, ranging from minimal neck snapping hip hop to floaty electronic down-tempo beats, this hour long collection is by no means a throw away album but one that you will find yourself returning to – discovering something unturned with each listen.

Tracks such as ’Drops’ and ‘Eluma Horns’ thump and groove effortlessly through the heart of the album while ‘Dwarf Dance’ brings in fLako’s newer (Hud-Mo-esque) sound with great effect. ‘Lords of Chaos’ (just 44 seconds in length) could easily be three times as long, but I guess that this is the point of fLako’s ‘Dilla-Donuts’ style mini-beat release, there is a lot more for him to offer and for us to enjoy. This project comes neatly packaged with artwork supplied by surrealist painter Dan May, known for his depictions of hairy fantasy creatures possessing humanlike features.

Judging by the scope of sound displayed on ‘The Mesektet’, fLako is an artist that should be watched closely over the coming years.
